What is ellaOne?
ellaOne is an emergency prevention ("Pille afterwards") with the active ingredient Ulipristalacetate. It can prevent pregnancy up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected intercourse.
Compared to Levonorgestrel preparations (like PiDaNa), ellaOne has a longer working period and is more effective even with higher body weight.
ellaOne is available in Germany without prescription in the pharmacy.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Ulipristalacetat 30 mg
Ulipristal acetate is a selective progesterone receptor modulator. It mainly works by:
Ovulation inhibition: The ovulation is delayed or prevented – even if it is immediately imminent. This is the most important mechanism of action.
Important:
- ellaOne does NOT work when the ovulation has already taken place
- It's NOT an abortion pill
- Existing pregnancy is not terminated
Who is it suitable for?
ellaOne is suitable for women by:
- Unprotected intercourse
- Condominium torn, forgot pill
- Sexual attack
Can be taken up up to 120 hours (5 days) after the event.
Available Dosages
- A tablet with 30 mg of ulipristal acetate
- One-time intake
How to Take
Intake:
- As fast as possible after unprotected sex
- Can be taken at any time in the cycle
- With or without meal
- When vomiting within 3 hours: take again
After receipt:
- reliably prevent until the next period (condom)
- The normal prevention can be started again immediately
Contraindications
ellaOne should not be taken at:
- Existing pregnancy
- Heavy liver disease
- Heavy asthma under glucocorticoid therapy
- Known allergy to Ulipristal acetate
Possible Side Effects

- Headaches
- nausea
- Underlying pain
- fatigue
After receipt:
- The next period can move
- Stronger or weaker bleeding possible
- Intermediate bleeding may occur
Interactions
The effect may be reduced by:
- Enzyme inductors (Johanniskraut, certain antiepileptics)
- Taking within 5 days of ellaOne: no hormonal contraception begin
