What is Propecia?
Propecia is the first and most well-known drug for the treatment of inherited hair loss (androgenic alopecia) in men. It was developed by MSD (Merck Sharp & Dohme) and approved in 1998.
The active ingredient Finasteride contains inhibits the enzyme that converts testosterone into the hair-damaging DHT. As a result, the hair loss is stopped and in many men more hair grows again.
Propecia is the original product – Finasterid has also been available as a cheaper generic since the patent procedure. The effect is identical, many men prefer the original for reasons of trust.
** Propecia is approved exclusively for men. Women, especially pregnant women, must not take the drug and should not touch broken tablets.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Finasterid
The mechanism of hair loss: In men with genetic predisposition, the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT lets the hair follicles shrink on the head – the hair becomes thinner and finally fall out.
The effect of Propecia: Finasteride inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (type II) and thereby reduces the DHT level in the blood and in the scalp by about 70%.
The result:
- The hair follicles are protected
- The hair loss is stopped at about 90% of men
- At about 65% of men grow more hair
- Existing hair gets stronger
Language: The effect does not apply immediately. First visible results after 3-6 months, optimal effect after 12-24 months continuous intake.
