What is ventolar?
Ventolair is a dosing aerosol with the inhalative corticoid beclometasondipropionate in extra fine formulation. The particularly small particles also reach the fine, peripheral airways and thus provide a better distribution of active ingredients in the entire lung.
The drug is used for preventive long-term treatment of bronchiale asthma. In addition to the classic dosing aerosol, the breathable version Ventolair Easi Breathe is also available.
The extrafine formulation allows lower dosages with comparable activity compared to conventional beclometason inhalers.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Beclometasondipropionat
Beclometason in extra fine formulation:
Special feature of extrafine particles:
- particle size about 1 μm (instead of 3-5 μm in conventional)
- also reaching small airways (< 2 mm diameter)
- Higher lung deposition (approx. 50-60% instead of 10-20%)
- More uniform distribution throughout the lung
Active mechanism: 1. Beclometason is converted into an active 17-BMP lung Two. Binding with glucocorticoid receptors 3. Inhibits inflammation mediators 4. Reduces mucous membrane swelling and hyperreagiability
Clinical advantage: The better distribution allows lower doses to be used with the same effectiveness.
Who is it suitable for?
Ventolair is suitable for:
- Asthma bronchiale in adults and young people
- As a basic therapy (controller)
- Patients who benefit from extra-fine formulation
Ventolair Easi Breathe:
- Breath controlled – no coordination problem
- Especially suitable for older patients
- Automatic triggering when inhaling
Not suitable:
- For the acute treatment of breathlessness
- In acute asthma attack
Available Dosages
Ventolair dosing aerosol:
- 100 μg per stroke (extrafein)
- 200 μg per stroke (extrafein)
Dosing with asthma (adults):
- Light: 100-200 μg per day
- Medium: 200-400 μg per day
- Heavy: 400-800 μg per day
Attention – dose conversion: Because of the higher lung deposition, the extrafine doses correspond approximately to twice the conventional formulation. 100 μg extrafein ≅200 μg conventional.
