What is Emla?
Emla® cream contains the two local anesthetics Lidocain and Prilocain and is used for local anesthesia of the skin. In the case of premature sperm (Ejaculatio praecox), it is applied off-label to the acorn to reduce sensitivity and extend the time to sperm.
Premature sperm is the most common sexual disorder in men and affects about 20–30 % of all men. The topical desensitization with Emla® is a proven method that could significantly extend the intravaginal ejaculation latency (IELT) in several studies.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Lidocain 25 mg/g + Prilocain 25 mg/g
Active mechanism:
- Lidocain and Prilocain block sodium channels in the nerve fibers
- Prevent the transmission of nerve impulses
- Reduce the sensitivity of the glans penis
- Extend time to ejaculation
Clinical effect:
- Reduction of the oversensitivity of the acorn
- Extension of the IELT (intravaginal ejaculation latency) by 2–5 times
- Entry into effect: 15–20 minutes after application
- duration of action: 30–60 minutes
Evidence: Several randomized studies show a significant extension of the IELT under topical anaesthetics.
