What is Priligy?

Priligy is the first and only medicine authorised in Germany specifically for the treatment of premature sperm (Ejaculatio praecox). The active ingredient Dapoxetin belongs to the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), but was developed specifically for this indication.

Unlike other SSRIs, which are taken daily as antidepressants, Dapoxetin acts very quickly and is only taken if necessary. The effect already begins with the first intake – no need for weeks of saturation.

In clinical trials, Priligy was able to extend the time to sperm by 2 to 3 times. Many men also report on improved control and higher satisfaction with sexual life.

The drug is distributed by Menarini and is available in Germany since 2009.

Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action

Active ingredient: Dapoxetin

The background: The premature sperm has often to do with an imbalance of the messenger substance serotonin in the brain. serotonin plays an important role in controlling ejaculation – higher serotonin levels can inhibit ejaculation reflex.

The effect of Dapoxetin: Dapoxetin inhibits the resumption of serotonin into the nerve cells. As a result, more serotonin remains available in the synaptic gap and the signal transmission is changed. This leads to better control over the ejaculation time.

Available Dosages

Dosing recommendations:

Start: 30 mg, 1-3 hours before sexual intercourse
In case of insufficient effect: Increase to 60 mg possible
For severe side effects: Stay at 30 mg or rethink therapy

Important:

Maximum one dose per 24 hours
Only take on scheduled intercourse
Not suitable for daily continuous intake

First assessment: After 4 weeks or 6 receipts, the treatment success should be checked. If there is no sufficient effect, the therapy should not be continued.

How to Take

Intake:

Serotonin Syndrome: In combination with other serotonic drugs. Symptoms: restlessness, trembling, sweating, fever – immediately consult doctor.

** Many side effects (irrigibility, dizziness) are dose-dependent and occur at 30 mg less frequently than at 60 mg.

Interactions

Absolute contraindicated:

MAO inhibitors: Heavy, potentially life-threatening interactions
Other SSRI/SNRI: Increased serotonin syndrome risk
Triptane: Increased serotonin syndrome risk
Tramadol: Increased serotonin syndrome risk
Starke CYP3A4 inhibitor: Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Ritonavir

Important interactions:

Moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor (erythromycin, fluconazole): maximum dose 30 mg
CYP2D6 inhibitors: Caution, Dapoxetin mirror can be increased
PDE-5-Hemmer: Combination possible but close-mesh monitoring
Blow pressure medication: Increased blood pressure reduction possible
Alcohol: Increases risk of powerlessness and side effects

Johanniskraut: Do not take at the same time – increased serotonin syndrome risk.
