What is Dymista® nasal spray?
Dymista® is an innovative combination nose spray that combines two proven active ingredients in one product: azelastin (a topical antihistaminic) and floodicasonpropionate (a nasal corticosteroid). This combination offers the fastest and strongest relief of all nasal allergy symptoms.
In clinical studies, Dymista® was significantly more effective than the sole use of floodicason nase spray or azelastin nase spray. It relieves both the clogged nose (through the corticosteroid) as well as sneezing, itching and nasal skating (through the antihistaminic) – and faster than any monotherapy.
Dymista® is recommended for moderate to severe allergic rhinitis if a nasal corticosteroid or an antihistaminic agent alone is not sufficient.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Azelastinhydrochlorid / Fluticasonpropionat
Dymista® combines two different mechanisms of action:
1. Azelastin (antihistaminic):
- Blocks H1 inhibitor receptors locally in the nasal mucosa
- Fast action (within 15 minutes)
- additionally inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators
- also works with non-allergic rhinitis
2. Fluticasonpropionate (Corticosteroid):
- Strong anti-inflammatory effect in the nasal mucosa
- Reduces swelling of the mucous membrane (swelling)
- inhibits eosinophilic infiltration
- Full effect after a few days of regular application
Synergy effect:
- The combination acts faster than Fluticason alone
- Stronger overall action than any individual component
- Azelastin accelerates the action of Fluticason
- In studies superior symptom control over monotherapy
Who is it suitable for?
Dymista® is suitable for:
- Adults and young people from 12 years
- Moderate to heavy allergic rhinitis
- If a nasal corticosteroid or antihistaminic alone is not sufficient
- Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
Especially recommended at:
- Heavy hay fever symptoms with clogged nose and sneezing/huck irritation
- Patients who do not respond sufficiently to monotherapy
- If both fast and lasting effect is desired
- allergy to several pollen species (longer season)
Not suitable:
- Children under 12 years
- hypersensitivity to azelastin or floodicason
- Acute nasal nebula infection without medical treatment

Contraindications
**Dymista® must not be used at:* *
- hypersensitivity to azelastin, floodicason or any of the other components
Preview at:
- Heavy liver failure
- Simultaneous therapy with Ritonavir or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Active tuberculosis
- Systemic fungal infections
- Nose septum ulcers or nasal operations
- Glaukom
- Cataract (Great Star)
- Children and adolescents
pregnant and breastfeeding: No sufficient data for the combination. Should only be applied after strict use-risk weighing. Systemic recording is low.
Possible Side Effects
Family (1–10 %):
- Bitter taste (by azelastin when spray runs into the throat)
- Nose bleeding (Epistaxis)
- Headaches
** Occasionally (0.1-1 %):* *
- Nose irritation or dryness
- Sneezing directly after application
- unpleasant smell
- nausea (with bitter taste)
Selten:
- Nose septumperforation (for long-term use, very rare)
- Sensitivity reactions
- Somnolence (activity due to azelastin, rare for nasal use)
** The bitter taste is the most common cause of the settling. It can be minimized by correct application technology (head slightly forward, not excessively breathing).
Interactions
Preview at:
- Ritonavir and strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (increased systemic floodicason exposure)
- Other nasal corticosteroids (additive cortisol suppression)
- CNS-damping substances (theoretical reinforcement of azelastin sedation)
- Alcohol (easy reinforcement of sedative azelastin action possible)
No relevant interaction with:
- Oral antihistamines (but usually not necessary in combination with Dymista®)
- Oral cortisone preparations
- Antibiotics
** The systemic absorption of both active ingredients from Dymista® is low, so systemic interactions are unlikely.
